1 Postdoc position and 1 PhD position Deserve Scholarship Essay in ultracold atomic gases

Job description

1 Postdoc position

In the "Cold Atoms and Quantum Gases" group a postdoc position is available, on the FOM projects "Quantum Phase Separation in Ultracold Mixtures of Helium-3 and Helium-4 gas" and "Correlated Helium Atoms in an Optical Lattice". Both projects run in our experimental setup that allows cooling and trapping of helium atoms in the metastable 2 3S1 state towards quantum egeneracy: Bose-Einstein Condensation for 4He and Fermi degeneracy for 3He. We transfer the ultracold clouds of helium atoms from a cloverleaf magnetic trap into an optical dipole trap and aim to observe phase separation of 3He and 4He, BEC of fermionic molecules and correlated motion of toms on a microchannel plate detector. An accurate measurement of the frequency of the magnetic dipole transition between the metastable 2 3S ansd 2 1S states, inside the dipole trap, is an alternative roject.

PhD position in ultracold atomic gases

There is an open PhD position (4 years, full salary) in the atomic, molecular and laserphysics group of the VU University Amsterdam to setup an experiment for an ultracold mixture of metastable helium and rubidium.

The aim of the project is to observe Efimov trimers in an ultracold mixture of metastable helium and rubidium atoms. The large mass ratio between these two atomic species results in a dramatic reduction of the spacing between successive HeRbRb Efimov states, allowing a first experimental test of the periodicity of the Efimov spectrum. This research will lead to new insight in the emerging field of few-body physics with ultracold atoms, with the aim to better understand and control strongly interacting quantum matter.

Within the PhD project a new infrastructure for ultracold rubidium (87Rb) has to be built up and merged with an existing apparatus for laser cooling of metastable helium (including source and Zeeman slower).

Starting date from 1st June 2011.
